Dear Colleagues,

We write today to ask you to join together with us to improve our pay, benefits, and working conditions by forming a union, as over 120,000 higher education workers have done across the country.

As you may know, the National Labor Relations Board now legally recognizes graduate students who perform teaching or research duties as employees. This is a long-overdue acknowledgement of the work we do at Emory, where we play an increasingly important role in fulfilling the education and research mission of the university.

Despite these substantial contributions, graduate students lack a voice in determining the conditions of our employment. Our community shares a set of common concerns.

We want:
• Stipends that amount to a living wage
• Inclusive healthcare with dental, vision, better coverage for women’s health, and options for dependents
• Recourse in situations involving discriminatory, exploitative, and/or self-interested advisors
• Recognition and adequate representation of individual departments’ interests
• Security within our current political climate, where the uncertain future of research and
education policy threatens those who depend on NSF, NIH, or NEH grants
• The declaration of Emory as a Sanctuary Campus
• A stronger voice in the Emory community for members of underrepresented groups
By forming a union, we can strive together to improve every aspect of our employment. If you support the unionization effort, please sign a confidential, online authorization form. It is the most important step to advance us toward an official vote.

Joining together at Emory will unite us with unionized campuses throughout the country who are giving themselves a voice in the direction of higher education as a whole. We have begun organizing with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), home to 120,000 members who work in higher education. Their Graduate Worker Forward and Faculty Forward campaigns are organizing graduate students and faculty at many of our peer institutions, including Duke, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern.

Emory as a whole only stands to gain. Competitive benefits and stipends will allow our departments and faculty to recruit the best graduate students. Undergraduates will have better classroom experiences when their teachers are free from instability. The essential work of this institution, its education and research, will only be furthered by a union that grants us the support and dignity we deserve.

If you would like more information, have concerns to share, or would like to find out how you can help, please contact the organizing committee at You can also learn more by visiting our website at

Fellow graduate students at Emory, it’s time to unite!

[We have appended below the signatures of faculty and undergraduate students who also support our effort to form a union.]
